Tourism in York
A meeting recently was a reminder of varying responses to tourism from permanent residents. In York, many years ago, one response became a badge, shown in the illustration.
In some respects the negative environmental impact of tourism is global and not really specific to locations, such as with air travel, whereas cruise ships visitng Venice can be counted and impact linked to a spot. Community-led tourism aims to use local analysis to develop relevant solutions
City of York Council has a Tourism Strategy and this Vision has five Key Priorities. One concerns the environment and carbon reduction in particular, This is the direct quote (with dubious grammar and puctuation) ‘Green York: Our businesses and visitors’ commitment proactively contributes to York’s transition to net zero carbon emissions by 2030.’
A ‘greener’ York could also be an attraction for visitors, people would come here because of York’s ‘greenness’. This would be beneficial for permananent residents all the year round.
