A new and sustainable place to live.

9 August 2026

York Environment Forum has been watching the progress of YoCo – York Central Co-owned – over several years.

The aim is to build 45 individual homes, shared communal facilities and a street of premises for trading and enterprise. The development would be on York Central, the area near the railway to the side of Leeman Road.

YoCo is incorporating sustainability features which many housing developments lack. The buildings themselves will be built to ‘passivhaus’ standards with minimal heating costs, and ventilation in hot weather. Facilities for cycling and walking will encourage active travel and discourage private car use except where an individual has mobility needs. Bus and train services are within easy reach. The York Central site itself incorporates systems for water drainage, and is incorporating a park area. YoCo will have its own planting and wants to ensure residents can hear birdsong. Having residential and trading premises as part of the same development will assist a circular economy approach so some residents can live where they work, and all can buy locally.

There is already a group of people who would like to live there and are thinking in detail about what sort of housing they would like and what the neighbourhood should include. The group is inviting other people to join them. Get in touch at yocoinformation@gmail.com. Open to all, no restrictions of age, income, wealth, current housing situation, just need motivation.
